Philosophy, Logic and the Scientific Method专业,他也是温彻斯特公学多年来难得一见的华人head boy。

Initially, coming here was my parents’ idea and I was reluctant to leave my old school. However, out of the potential schools that I had visited, I preferred Winchester, as I was able to visit my soon-to-be house and felt that there was a strong sense of community across the whole house. I was also impressed by the music facilities in particular, and how accessible they were.

Since I was a sixth form entrant, my exam was quite different to the standard procedure. Since I was originally planning on studying Physics, Philosophy, and Economics, I took an exam for all those subjects, as well as a general exam paper, which tested my reasoning and comprehension skills. The philosophy and economics papers did not require any previous knowledge in the subjects. For the weeks leading up to the exam, I took a crash course in Philosophy and Economics, and did a couple past papers. Ultimately, the exam was not as hard as I thought it would be, and many of the questions were not looking at what I knew, but rather how I approached an issue.

Talking with my friends, I know that the normal entrance exam for first years involved Maths, English, Science, French, History, and Latin.

I had interviews alongside my exams with the heads of departments, school management, and our housemaster. My housemaster told me later that he was mainly looking for someone who would fit into the house and contribute something to the community, and I remember his questions were mainly about what I did outside of the classroom, and what I could bring to the house. I could remember quite clearly the school management asking every applicant about DIV, which is a special subject offered at Winchester.

The head of department interviews were extremely varied. The economics teacher mainly asked me questions to find out what I was interested in within the subject of economics. The physics teacher asked me to solve a couple of physics questions, which were based on simple concepts but were quite tricky. The philosophy teacher and I had a philosophical debate during the interview, where all of my beliefs were challenged. At one point, he asked me a question and I began to answer, but he stopped me, saying that he could tell that this was a question that I had prepared – he asked me to answer for myself and what I really thought. Personally, I found the philosophy interview to be the most enjoyable.

There are various traditions at Winchester that are quite unique. For example, Winchester Football, or ‘Winkies’, is a sport played only at Winchester, and one of the most popular sports here. Every year around the start of March, there is a Winkies game known as XVs, played between 2 teams, each representing a half of the houses at Winchester. It is undoubtedly a highlight of the year, with most of the school showing up, and art being created for the event, dedicated to the players. The atmosphere of the matches and the build up are quite special for me, and I was involved in the art projects for XVs for every year I was at the school.

In the top 2 years, we usually get up and have breakfast at around 8am, and go to morning lessons at 8:45. We have a break at 10:45 and have lunch at 1pm. On Monday, Wednesday and Friday, we have afternoon lessons from 4-6pm in the Winter and Spring term (2-4pm in the Summer term).

However, on every other day we do not, and we instead have the time to do activities such as sport or art. This time is known as ‘ekker’.

Tea is at 6, and we have a designated homework time in house (known as ‘toytime’) between 7 and 9, with a short break at 8.

Finally, we have a whole house meeting and sign in at 9, known as ‘preces’, and the younger boys have to sleep at around 10.

For the top 2 years, there is an additional sign in meeting at 10:30, and no strict bedtime. I mostly spend my hours after preces doing any additional homework that I did not finish during toytime.

At school, I would often create my own oil paintings in the art department building (‘art school’), since doing so was free and quite relaxing.

I would also practice the violin and piano in the music department building (‘music school’), as it was very close to my house, and it was very easy to just walk in to any empty practice room and practice on a grand piano.

In the evenings, I would often spend time with other people in the house in the community kitchen (known as ‘conduit’) and make some food, or in the TV room.

Deputy head boy?

I was named deputy head boy as I was going into my final year at Winchester. I was first put forward by my housemaster, and the headmaster picked me from the nominations of other housemasters.

I learned later from my housemaster that the main reason that I was picked was because of my achievements outside of the classroom, such as being part of the orchestra and coming second in an art presentation prize the year before.

As deputy head, my main job was to watch what was happening around me – for example, what the school was doing to combat COVID risks, and then report back to the head boy and the school management.

Each Friday, we would have a meeting with all the prefects, discussing various things about how the school is run, what the management have done for the week, and how the students feel about it. Personally, what I learned from the role was that with most of the things that I did as a deputy head, I could’ve reasonably done if I was not a prefect.

However, I realised that being deputy head gave me the motivation to organise activities and be more involved in the community, which I probably would not have done to the same degree if I was not a prefect.

Essentially, I learned the importance of not being scared to create new activities and trying to change things, both around the house and the school.

DIV is a non-examined subject that all students at Winchester must do. It is led by a DIV teacher, and what we do in the lessons entirely depends on what the teacher wants to teach. It is mainly a lesson where we discuss whatever topic the teacher brings up, and it reaches the interesting topics that may not be covered in lessons.

Personally, the most valuable skill I learned in DIV was gaining confidence and knowing how to present in front of an audience: our teacher would often get us to make our own presentations, and at one point, give our own 40-minute lessons on whatever we wanted. It was probably the subject I was best at, as I enjoyed the discussion and presentation elements.

Winchester would often offer talks given by famous speakers every couple of weeks or so. We have many societies within Winchester and many of them organise talks that anyone can attend. Many of the talks are organised by the boys themselves.

I usually turn up to many of the high profile appearances, with the most recent one being a talk and Q
